EDITORIAL WRITING

For over fifteen years, I’ve written food and lifestyle stories for print and digital publications including Sunset, Wine & Spirits, Civil Eats and Fodor’s Travel Publications. I currently report on restaurants, food producers and hotels/resorts for 1859 Magazine and other outlets. I also cover artists, art museums and non-profits with an environmental focus for 1889 Magazine.

Many of my stories have a Pacific Northwest bent and when I’m not writing, I’m out exploring the many wonders of this region. Whether that’s our distinct merroir and meeting with oyster farmers and fishers or boarding a four-seat Cessna to unwind at a remote river retreat in the sprawling Eagle Cap Wilderness. (Read that story here).

I most frequently write about the people and places behind what we eat and drink with a healthy dose of travel-related features mixed in. I pursue topics I’m curious about and I’m especially drawn to opportunities to learn something new. In Oregon, there’s always something new and fascinating to discover, whether that’s a cutting edge seaweed farm or inspiring scientists researching the state’s kelp forests. (Two favorite stories I pursued in recent years).  Read on for samples of my published clips.

BRAND STORYTELLING

In addition to editorial writing, I work with brands and organizations on a range of copywriting projects from guide books and advertorials to newsletters and social media content.

2026 Goal:
✔️Avalanche Dog Feature 🎿 ❄️ 🐕

Loved covering @mtbachelor’s wildly inspiring Avy Dogs for @1859oregon. In the winter issue you can meet the four remarkable canines who serve as essential members of the Pro Ski Patrol team. ⛷️

The roster includes Ruddy, an endearing border collie, and equally winsome golden retrievers Shasta, Cashew and Jetty.

To visitors, these avalanche dogs may seem like charming companions on patrol, but their work is far more sophisticated. Training begins when the pups are just 8 to 12 weeks old and follows the rigorous, multi-year Swiss Guidelines for avalanche dog preparation.

In the earliest months, the focus is on basic obedience and mountain-travel skills such as riding snowmobiles and chairlifts, as well as shadowing their handler on skis. Playful hide-and-seek sessions evolve into treat-based search exercises, eventually building to complex scenarios like locating and digging out a buried person in a deep snow cave.

On average, it takes two to four years for a dog to pass certification tests. Handlers—selected from the most seasoned patrollers—undergo equally rigorous evaluations and commit to continual training themselves.

While primed for true avalanche rescues, the dogs are most often used for preemptive searches or to sweep zones rather than respond to active emergencies. Yet with 101 ski runs spread across 4,300 acres of lift-accessible terrain, there’s no doubt these skilled avy dogs play a vital role in keeping the mountain safe.

Whenever I fly from @pdxairport, I look forward to Whenever I fly from @pdxairport, I look forward to stopping by the collection of artwork by Deb Stoner. Her exquisite flora and fauna portraits have captivated me for years.

So it was a thrill to feature her artwork in @1859oregon and to learn more about her intricate process. You can see her large scale photographs at the end of Concourse D. She also has a fantastic piece in the tasting room @domainewillamette in Dayton (last image).

Thank you @smallartist for sharing your story!

Deb Stoner makes exquisite still life photographs of local flowers and bugs with captivating detail.
“Now, I’m the slowest walker in the world because I have to stop and examine the life cycle of a specific plant or caterpillar.”

Using a flatbed scanner as her camera, Stone’s work blends traditional photography with contemporary digital technology. As she works on each still life composition, she thinks of the larger story the flowers and bugs can tell. Whether that’s a narrative about threatened species (see the Fender’s blue butterfly) or just magnifying the natural world in an eloquent way that provokes curiosity and contemplation.

Stoner found an international audience following a solo exhibit @pdxairport. Her luminous pieces from that show, “A Year in the Willamette Valley,” are now part of Port of Portland’s permanent art collection.

She frequently gets emails from travelers who find a moment of calm when they pass her artwork. “Those notes make my heart sing,” she said. “That’s my art doing exactly what I hoped.”

It was the shortest little trip and @thenantucket exceeded all expectations. Hoping the next book fest leads to more lit-inspired adventures.

Who knew that transforming plastic pollution into Who knew that transforming plastic pollution into eye-catching artwork would capture the imagination and hearts of people around the world?

For fifteen years, Washed Ashore, Art to Save the Sea has leveraged the power of art to educate a global audience about plastic pollution in the ocean and to spark positive changes in consumer habits.

We were thrilled to highlight the organization in the summer issue of @1859oregon. Here’s a peek at some of the phenomenal sculptures you can see around the state, all with the mission to give a voice to sea creatures. 🐙🐳🐟🪸🦑

Head to the @oregoncoastaquarium for a new exhibit that features 15 different sculptures of wildlife, all made from Pacific Northwest beach-sourced debris through Jan 4.
