Love using art as a guide for travel? You can also Love using art as a guide for travel? You can also plan your next trip to Oregon’s Adventure Coast all around sea-inspired sustainable art and sculptures. 🪸🦑

Start with the Oregon Coast Public Art Trail along with some of the standout pieces I got to highlight in this itinerary for @southernoregoncoast.

Including photos from glamping years ago @baypointlanding but hope to visit later this summer while touring @washedashoreart and more.

One of my favorite spots to frequent when visiting One of my favorite spots to frequent when visiting Cannon Beach is Artist Alley. And I loved writing about these fantastic artists along with so many others who make Cannon Beach one of America’s 100 Top Art Towns.

Read more in the new Cannon Beach Visitor’s Guide, excerpts below on two cool galleries you can visit:
@drearosefrost’s @shearwatergallery and @basaltcannonbeach 🌊

At Shearwater Studio & Gallery @shearwatergallery, Drea Frost is often painting her expressive seascapes in a sliver by the window, while her gallery assistant — a toy poodle named Freddie — greets guests.

Her vibrant work captures the beauty of coastal life from fishers at sea to surfers smoothly riding waves. When not painting, she’s often chasing waves on her own board.

In addition to her work, Frost shows a collection of regional and local artists in a variety of mediums from driftwood sculptures by Josh Bluett to wood-turned bowls by Brett Williamson.

Other standout artists she spotlights include gyotaku by Duncan Berry (@byland_bysea_byair) and wool and plant dye tapestry from Kyla Sjogren.

Head to the neighboring Basalt Studio @basaltcannonbeach and you can meet ceramicist Michelle Valigura in her light-filled studio and showroom. A dedicated sculptor, Valigura creates ceramic pieces in the form of wall art in earthy hues. Her professional background includes designing for stop motion animation, including Elf and the Simpsons.

A nexus for pop-up events, the shop stocks art and handmade clothing, as well as a surprisingly robust culinary selection. Look for ramen from around the world, tinned fish and a selection of women-made wines and sake.

Essential reading for your next Oregon Coast trip! Essential reading for your next Oregon Coast trip! 🌊

The fabulous cover story is by @jeanchensmith but for this coastal-themed issue I was thrilled to profile @oregonschoice, an inspiring next-gen canned tuna business led by SueAnna Harrison. 🐟

Also, a spotlight on @surfrideroregon and the crucial work they do to protect and preserve our ocean beaches. 🏄🏻‍♀️

Oregon has five active volunteer chapters and you can join the efforts at upcoming events that range from beach cleanups and policy roundtables to surf camps.

And don’t miss the standout feature by Julie Lee on the state’s leading salmon fishers, including @sisu_sea_sister. 🎣 Plus, recipes from @localoceanseafoods.

Last year I wrote about Oregon’s tufted puffins Last year I wrote about Oregon’s tufted puffins and fell head over heels for the charismatic birds so I was excited to be in Cannon Beach for the “Puffin Welcome Celebration.”

The seabirds return to Haystack Rock each summer for breeding season, nesting from April through August. You’ll need a bird scope to see them which @haystackrockawarenessprogram sets out for visitors.

We didn’t get to see them on this trip—in the first video you’ll see little dots perched on Haystack Rock—which we thought were puffins but were actually two majestic bald eagles. 🦅

It was still a wonderful morning spent learning about other seabirds, admiring sea stars and talking about favorite coastal spots with different volunteers.

And one shared a great tip for puffin spotting. Plan a visit in late summer and go puffin watching at sunrise, where you might catch a ray of sun glow up the bird’s orange beak as they fly around the basalt rock. 🌊

For Earth Week, revisiting two inspiring artists I For Earth Week, revisiting two inspiring artists I got to feature in recent issues of @1889washington.

🌊 “Ocean Art” highlights the phenomenal work by @karenhackenberg. She finds endless inspiration on the beaches near her home in Port Townsend, where she transforms beach debris into provocative seascapes to raise awareness about ocean pollution and ignite change. Find her artwork in Seattle @patricia_rovzar_gallery.

🏞️ “A River Runs Through It” features wildlife photographer David Moskowitz’s most recent book, Big River: Resilience and Renewal on the Columbia River Basin, taking readers on a visual journey through the epic Columbia Watershed. The luminous book is published by @mtnbooks.

Both artists spark a powerful reminder of how vital it is to protect and preserve our waterways now and for the future.
