Last year I wrote about Oregon’s tufted puffins and fell head over heels for the charismatic birds so I was excited to be in Cannon Beach for the “Puffin Welcome Celebration.”

The seabirds return to Haystack Rock each summer for breeding season, nesting from April through August. You’ll need a bird scope to see them which @haystackrockawarenessprogram sets out for visitors.

We didn’t get to see them on this trip—in the first video you’ll see little dots perched on Haystack Rock—which we thought were puffins but were actually two majestic bald eagles. 🦅

It was still a wonderful morning spent learning about other seabirds, admiring sea stars and talking about favorite coastal spots with different volunteers.

And one shared a great tip for puffin spotting. Plan a visit in late summer and go puffin watching at sunrise, where you might catch a ray of sun glow up the bird’s orange beak as they fly around the basalt rock. 🌊

For Earth Week, revisiting two inspiring artists I got to feature in recent issues of @1889washington.

🌊 “Ocean Art” highlights the phenomenal work by @karenhackenberg. She finds endless inspiration on the beaches near her home in Port Townsend, where she transforms beach debris into provocative seascapes to raise awareness about ocean pollution and ignite change. Find her artwork in Seattle @patricia_rovzar_gallery.

🏞️ “A River Runs Through It” features wildlife photographer David Moskowitz’s most recent book, Big River: Resilience and Renewal on the Columbia River Basin, taking readers on a visual journey through the epic Columbia Watershed. The luminous book is published by @mtnbooks.

Both artists spark a powerful reminder of how vital it is to protect and preserve our waterways now and for the future.

Swooning over the sunken living room and lobby library at the completely refreshed @valleyriverinn in Eugene.

Many design elements celebrate the area’s historic logging industry—from original timber beams to grand chandeliers made from old mill parts.

But you’ll also find fresh artwork and stunning reclaimed wood pieces from the locally owned @urbanlumberco adding modern flair.

It’s a cozy spot for rainy days, but I can’t wait to return this summer to take advantage of the miles of riverfront trails just outside the Inn.

Sometimes we need a reminder of the beauty and bal

Sometimes we need a reminder of the beauty and balance found in embracing imperfection. Enter the art form of kintsugi, a centuries-old Japanese craft of restoring broken objects like ceramics or glass in a way that highlights rather than hides imperfections.

Kintsugi — which means to “join with gold” — uses urushi (a gold-dusted lacquer) to exquisitely repair chips and cracks in pottery. The philosophy is that by illuminating flaws, the object takes on a deeper beauty and meaning. For artist and conservator Naoko Fukumaru, kintsugi is a way to accept the ever-present imperfections and impermanence found in life.

Earlier this year, @portlandjapanesegarden had 73 pieces from Fukumaru on display and it was an honor to feature the renowned artist and her work in @1859oregon.

Each piece offers poetic pause and a reflection on what a gift it is to live in our perfectly imperfect world.

One of the best things about travel is meeting peo

One of the best things about travel is meeting people who spark joy. If you find yourself in the San Pancho area, book a walk with @lo_de_perla_jungle_garden. The non-profit botanical garden unfurls over 13 quiet hectares of gorgeous jungle trees and plants.

It’s also home to myriad birds (macaws, chachalacas) and wild boars, armadillos, foxes and more. The naturalist guides tend to a wondrous orchid garden that you’ll walk through at the end of the tour.

It’s a wonderful way to support small businesses and the local community. And a garden that’s dedicated to conservation and connecting visitors to nature. #travelforgood
