Whenever I fly from @pdxairport, I look forward to Whenever I fly from @pdxairport, I look forward to stopping by the collection of artwork by Deb Stoner. Her exquisite flora and fauna portraits have captivated me for years.

So it was a thrill to feature her artwork in @1859oregon and to learn more about her intricate process. You can see her large scale photographs at the end of Concourse D. She also has a fantastic piece in the tasting room @domainewillamette in Dayton (last image).

Thank you @smallartist for sharing your story!

Deb Stoner makes exquisite still life photographs of local flowers and bugs with captivating detail.
“Now, I’m the slowest walker in the world because I have to stop and examine the life cycle of a specific plant or caterpillar.”

Using a flatbed scanner as her camera, Stone’s work blends traditional photography with contemporary digital technology. As she works on each still life composition, she thinks of the larger story the flowers and bugs can tell. Whether that’s a narrative about threatened species (see the Fender’s blue butterfly) or just magnifying the natural world in an eloquent way that provokes curiosity and contemplation.

Stoner found an international audience following a solo exhibit @pdxairport. Her luminous pieces from that show, “A Year in the Willamette Valley,” are now part of Port of Portland’s permanent art collection.

She frequently gets emails from travelers who find a moment of calm when they pass her artwork. “Those notes make my heart sing,” she said. “That’s my art doing exactly what I hoped.”

My favorite travel game—imagining where I’d be My favorite travel game—imagining where I’d become a regular. Places I’d absolutely frequent if I lived on Nantucket:

🍋 @lemonpressnantucket darling space for breakfast or lunch (one morning Gilmore Girls was playing) 🍁

🍦@nantucketpharmacy serves up soup specials in autumn and sundaes in summer at a charming soda fountain

📚 @mitchellsbookcorner a bookstore worth the flight and ferry—sunny nooks, cozy reading chairs and a wall of Herman Melville 🐋

🖼️ John Rugge Antiques packed with eclectic and nostalgic treasures (near excellent dining @propsbar)

⚓️ @nantucketquarterboard crafts the enchanting wooden signs with clever and poetic names gracing homes on the island, a tradition that hails from 19th century sailing ships

After catching @elinhilderbrand and @timtalksbooks After catching @elinhilderbrand and @timtalksbooks at the @bostonbookfest, I booked a very impromptu ferry to a longtime dream destination. And fell head over heels for Nantucket in autumn.

It was the shortest little trip and @thenantucket exceeded all expectations. Hoping the next book fest leads to more lit-inspired adventures.

Who knew that transforming plastic pollution into Who knew that transforming plastic pollution into eye-catching artwork would capture the imagination and hearts of people around the world?

For fifteen years, Washed Ashore, Art to Save the Sea has leveraged the power of art to educate a global audience about plastic pollution in the ocean and to spark positive changes in consumer habits.

We were thrilled to highlight the organization in the summer issue of @1859oregon. Here’s a peek at some of the phenomenal sculptures you can see around the state, all with the mission to give a voice to sea creatures. 🐙🐳🐟🪸🦑

Head to the @oregoncoastaquarium for a new exhibit that features 15 different sculptures of wildlife, all made from Pacific Northwest beach-sourced debris through Jan 4.

Some coastal highlights from @1859oregon’s July/ Some coastal highlights from @1859oregon’s July/August issue that I got to cover and then put on repeat all summer long (prime season for impromptu jaunts to breezy beach towns). Luckily, Oregon’s golden summer sweeps through September. 🌊☀️

🐟 @captscorner, Garibaldi - always the first stop for seafood snacks, watching fishing boats and then fresh fish on the return trip home (pack your cooler)!

🦪 @schoonernetarts, Netarts - order the wood oven roasted oysters rockoyaki for the table and enjoy views of the pristine bay and resident pelicans

🍃Sitka Sedge State Natural Area - offers an easy walk through coastal forest and along a gorgeous estuary

🏕️ @twocapeslookout, Tierra del Mar - glamping (luxe vibes!) plan for dinner at the nearby @pelicanbrewing in Pacific City

🌊 Oceanside (last slide) - stroll quiet beaches in this sleepy town along the Three Capes Scenic Loop

Did you know the seafaring town of Newport is also Did you know the seafaring town of Newport is also home to Oregon’s only literary-themed hotel?

This bookish retreat is perched on a cliff at the edge of the sea and had enticed readers to the coast for decades. 📚🌊

Recently reimagined and refreshed, you’ll find contemporary touches throughout all the spaces and cozy literary vibes.

All guest rooms are named for either authors (Maya Angelou, Jane Austen) or after popular genres. Each room has curated book selections and there’s reading nooks on every level.

One of the most beautiful spaces is the light-filled lobby library ✨ — and the downstairs cafe with ocean views and a menu that nods to all things bookish.

Read more in the upcoming fall issue of @1859oregon.
