This photo is from my first assignment to eastern Wash. researching buffalo for a story to publish this spring. In addition to the impressive buffalo and a beautiful landscape, a major draw to visit Toppenish – where the West still lives – is to wander the rugged downtown. The western stores, saddlery shops and rodeo signs evoke scenes from a John Wayne movie set. Over 70 vibrant, outdoor murals portray the history of the town – telling stories that range from Native American traditions to the braceros who came from Mexico to help harvest the crops in the 1940s.
